Trains in and out of Penn Station were halted Wednesday for three hours due to a low-voltage problem, but service was restored in the afternoon.

Amtrak says service was suspended for nearly three hours due to a low-voltage problem that happened around 8:45 a.m.

According to Amtrak officials, the Acela Express, Northeast Regional (Boston-NYC-Washington) and Empire State (NYC-Albany-Niagara Falls) routes were affected.

New Jersey Transit also had temporarily suspended all service between Newark and New York.

The service interruption left hundreds of travelers temporarily stranded on one of the busiest travel days of the year.

"You know, you expect it with the planes but not the trains," said one traveler. "And you also pay the extra money for the Acela so you expect you're going to get there early. But I'm still in a good mood, so it doesn't matter."

"The best they can tell me is that, 'we'll update you whenever we get information,'" said another. "I mean, I've had worse, at least I'm not stuck on a tarmac."

The cause of the problem is under investigation.
