Former New York City Police Commissioner Howard Safir accidentally hit a woman with his sports utility vehicle on the Upper East Side but will not face criminal charges, police said Saturday.

Police say the woman was hit by the SUV on Third Avenue by East 81st Street shortly after 2 p.m. Friday.

She was taken to New York-Presbyterian Hospital and treated for a bruised shoulder, but was not seriously injured.

The New York Times reported Saturday that the woman was pregnant.

Investigators determined that Safir was unaware that someone was hit, and no criminal charges were filed against the police commissioner.

Safir, who served as commissioner from 1996 to 2000, could still face civil charges.
