After facing mounting opposition by both city leaders and residents, the Obama administration is looking at a possible change of venue for the September 11th terror trials, sources tell NY1.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Governor David Paterson and numerous other politicians have called for the trials of Khalid Shaikh Mohammed and four codefendants to be held elsewhere.

Bloomberg yesterday called Attorney General Eric Holder to push for a change of venue, saying the trial at the federal courthouse on Pearl Street in Lower Manhattan would be a costly for taxpayers and the trials would be disruptive for city residents.

Senator Charles Schumer said Thursday the rising tide of opposition turned in the last two days.

"Well, I think the main thing that happened was that the mayor and the police commissioner laid out legitimate concerns, about costs -- billions of dollars over several years; logistics -- large parts of downtown might have to be in lock down for periods of time; and of course about safety. Those concerns led me to call the White House and argue that they explore alternatives. It made sense," Schumer said.

"Have a federal court trial but have it in a military installation in the Southern District of New York. So we proposed Stewart National Air Guard Base, we proposed West Point, we proposed Otisville and we proposed Governor's Island," said Community Board 1 member Julie Menin. "Those are the four sites, just to start with, that we're asking him to immediately do a feasibility study on."

Congressman Peter King of Long Island said he has introduced legislation to prohibit federal funds from going toward civilian trials for Guantanamo detainees.

That legislation would block the trials from taking place in any federal civilian court.
