More than a thousand newly-engaged women are tearing through Filene’s Basement searching for discounted bridal gowns in the annual "Running of the Brides" event. NY1's Roger Clark filed the following report. And they're off, hundreds of women elbowed their way to Filene's Basement with one goal, to find the perfect wedding dress.
"I'm going to put on every single dress until I find the right two – my wedding gown and my party dress," said bride-to-be Shantae Johnson.
Grabbing as many dresses as they could, most of these women were simply after the dress they would be married in. They had waited on line in the cold for hours outside the store, ready to pounce on nearly 2,500 designer gowns at bargain prices.
Kenndy Lainez and her wedding party were among the first on line.
"I was looking at some dresses on line and most of them are like $500 and up,” she said.
The bridal event offered prices from $250 to $700 for dresses that cost anywhere from $900 to $9,000 at bridal salons.
"Most brides, especially these days with the economy, are looking to save money, but are looking for a great dress, a designer label,” said Pat Boudrot of Filene’s Basement.
About an hour after the doors opened, Renee Florek was the first to actually buy a dress. She spent $500 for a $5,000 dress.
"I had it and I knew,” she said. “As soon as I had it on, I knew."
Soon other brides to be were also finding that special gown. Among them was Michelle Ripka, who drove up to the event from North Carolina.
"I kind of had an idea, but I was really open, so I was just going to try on as many dresses as I could, and hopefully one that fit,” she said. “And as soon as I tried this on, it fit exactly the way I wanted and I knew it
was it."
After about 90 minutes, Kenndy Lainez found her dream dress, too, for $250 – saving about $650. She thinks her future husband will approve, as well.
"If I love it, he loves it,” Lainez said. “So I'm really happy."
Filene's Basement says they'll sell 500 dresses at this event. The rest will be sent back to a warehouse in Massachusetts, and then put back on sale at a similar event in Boston on February 19th.
