A Manhattan socialite was charged with second-degree murder Saturday, a day after her dead son was discovered by police in a luxury Midtown hotel.

Police say they found the body of Jude Michael Mirra, aged eight, in a 16th-floor suite at the Peninsula Hotel on Fifth Avenue and 55th Street just before noon Friday.

Mirra's mother, 49-year-old Belgian-born Gigi Jordan, was also removed from the hotel room in critical condition.

Police had received a call from Jordan's relative in Belgium, who had received an email indicating that Jordan was going to kill herself and her son.

The two were found in the hotel room with hundreds of prescription drugs and papers, including an apparent suicide note, according to police.

Guests at the five-star hotel said they were shocked.

"I'm slightly nauseous just hearing about it," said one guest.

"We were just saying as we were walking out, how could you kill your own child? Very sad," said another.

Police say Jordan, who was still hospitalized in Bellevue by Saturday evening, made incriminating statements after the alleged murder-suicide attempt.

Published reports say Jordan was distraught over her impending divorce and worried about losing custody of Mirra.

The city medical examiner says the cause of the boy's death is pending toxicology reports.
