Raccoons in and around Central Park are being vaccinated to protect them and the surrounding community from rabies.

The New York City Department of Health says since December there have been more than three dozen documented cases of rabies among raccoons in the park and Upper Manhattan.

They say wildlife experts will humanely trap the raccoons, then vaccinate and tag them and release them in the same location.

The process will continue for four to eight weeks, then officials will repeat it next summer to vaccinate raccoons born this spring.

The Health Department is once again warning people not to touch or feed wild animals, or stray dogs and cats.
