An investigation is underway into what sparked a four-alarm fire that tore through a Manhattan apartment building early this morning.

Just before 3:45 a.m., flames broke out in a mattress store on the ground floor of 82 Greene Street in SoHo.

The fire quickly escalated and reached four alarms 90 minutes later, requiring around 200 firefighters to respond – and causing part of a ceiling to collapse.

No injuries were reported.

"It was about a 20 to 30 foot section of a hung ceiling,” said FDNY Deputy Assistant Chief Jack Mooney. “It was plaster attached to a wood frame, attached to the original ceiling, tremendously heavy. When it let go, it let go in one piece. It shook the building. The firefighters that were under it were not seriously injured because the shelving of the stock of the store that was in there. So they were kind of saved by being in the middle. They were able to back out and regroup.”

A resident on the fourth floor smelled the smoke and quickly alerted his neighbors.

"We rang everybody’s [door bell],” said building resident Serge Mosovich. “My wife rang [our neighbor’s] bell, we rang the third-floor people and we got out.”

“We actually went out, jumped the roof and went to another building and came down,” said Allen Miller, another building resident.

It took the firefighters about three hours to bring the blaze under control.

People who live in the building are still unclear as to when they'll be allowed to move back in.

“I don't know. It’s going to take a couple weeks,” said building manager Frank Burau. “The windows have to be replaced. This is a landmark building, so it’s going to take a while for everything to be restored back and have people move back.”

All together, the Red Cross said six adults and one child have been left homeless for the time being. None of them are requesting the organization's assistance.
