As Greenwich Village residents try to figure out where to go for their care now that St. Vincent's hospital is closing, those who work there are deciding what to do with their careers and their lives. Two days after the hospital board voted to close inpatient services at St. Vincent's Hospital, people who work at the Greenwich Village facility are facing a new reality.
"It's no joke, it's no joke," said St. Vincent's Operating Room Ward Clerk Kenya Clark.
There's no official closing date for the landmark that's been in the neighborhood for 160 years, but workers know they have to start making plans.
"Got to find a job, get unemployment," said St. Vincent's patient transporter Jose Bernales.
Many workers say the closing doesn't just affect them, it affects their families too.
"I'm a single mom, I have one child so this affects me tremendously," said St. Vincent's Medical Office Manager Bernadette Sahkarov.
"I need to come to terms with this because this was literally half my life that I gave to this institution and I never in a million years thought that this would possibly happen," said St. Vincent's Medical Secretary Kathy Barwick.
Co-workers who are also in disbelief spent some time on the corner of 12th Street and 7th Avenue Thursday seeking some relief from the stress upstairs.
While some displayed a smile, many said it was a different story inside.
"Sad, the girls are crying, I'm crying, in and out of the patients' rooms we're crying it's very sad, we're like family here," said St. Vincent's nurse Mary Ellen Fagin.
"It's very sad, very quiet, you can see people head down and it's hard to talk to because you can see how they feel," said Saint Vincent's employee Eduardo Gomez.
Many workers who spoke with NY1 talked about how they prayed for a reprieve, hoping for a miracle at the Catholic hospital.
"In the interim I will look for a job but right now I'm staying because the patients are still here and the nurses will stay to make sure the patients continue to get the care up until the end," said Saint Vincent's nurse John Hiltunen.
