Workers are preparing to demolish two Chinatown apartment buildings which were severely damaged in a seven-alarm fire early Monday morning.
Department of Buildings officials say the demolition of 283 and 285 Grand Street will begin Wednesday. Workers have already moved a large crane into place on Grand Street and Eldridge Street and removed scaffolding.
The demolition is expected to take about two weeks as crews remove one floor at a time, starting at the top.
The fire started around 10 p.m. Sunday and raged through the night – forcing 200 people onto the street and critically injuring two residents.
"It was a really, really big fire. It's so sad for this community," said a local resident.
The New York Red Cross says it has registered 50 families (185 adults and 35 children) for its services and has provided emergency housing to nearly 100 people.
Meanwhile, an autopsy was scheduled to take place Tuesday for an elderly man whose body was found in the rubble.
Firefighters discovered his body Monday night on the top floor of the six-story building. He's been identified in reports as 87-year-old Sing Ho.
The fire department says he was reported missing by relatives.
An advocacy group says it was aware of the problems at the building.
"The building and the owner has been cited numerous times, code violations, fire violations, and nothing had been done,” said Christopher Kui of Asian Americans for Equality.
The agency says two violations were issued to the building's owners over the last several years; one in 2009 for an obstructed exit and another in 2008 for a blocked fire escape.
