From a former astronaut to a reality TV powerhouse, the latest season of "Dancing with the Stars" has audiences hooked. Dalton Ross of Entertainment Weekly Magazine filed the following report. How does this keep happening? How can Kate Gosselin still be dancing on network television? I'm speaking, of course, about the tabloid terror and mother of approximately 817 children, who remains in contention as a contestant on ABC's "Dancing with the Stars."
Last I checked, Kate Gosselin couldn’t dance to save her life. Last I also checked, Kate had been caught by cameras berating her dancing partner, leading to a "Free Tony" campaign. Tony did actually quit, for a few minutes at least, before returning. So, if Kate can't dance, and if Kate doesn't really come across on screen as likeable, what the heck is she still doing there? And look at the people that were eliminated before her.
It's true that Buzz Aldrin wasn't much of a hoofer, but the man is an icon. He may not be able to moonwalk, but he walked on the moon, for crying out loud! Plus, he's 80. People should respect their elders by voting for them. But they didn't, and Buzz was sent home as well.
Aiden Turner? Well, I have no idea who he is. Some soap opera star, I guess. But we never saw him demean his spouse on a weekly basis on national television. Still, he's gone and Kate remains. She won't win, of course. But still, the fact that she's made it this far continues to baffle me. I mean, bad dancers have made it far before on the show, the same way bad singers can often last long on American Idol (and yes, I'm speaking to you, Tim Urban). But that usually happens because those contestants are likable losers.
With Kate Gosselin, I think it's more of a train wreck appeal. Whatever it is, it's working for her, and frightening for me.
