A manhole explosion just a few blocks away from Times Square was quickly brought under control Monday.
It happened in the middle of the afternoon on West 40th Street and 7th Avenue.
No injuries were reported.
A Con Edison spokesman says underground electric cables caused the fire.
The fire left many New Yorkers on edge given the recent events.
"I'm scared because we live in the 9/11 era, and what happened the other day, you know, a lot of things go through your mind. So, it's scary right now, it is," said one witness.
"As we walked to the corner here on 7th Avenue, Fashion Avenue, we seen the explosion and we seen the manhole covers fly up in the air, and we seen the fire come out of the ground, and we had to run for safety," said another.
There were no power outages as a result of the explosion.
