An elderly woman was hospitalized Tuesday morning after being hit by a truck in Manhattan.

Officials say the 70-year-old woman was crossing the street at the corner of 83rd Street and 3rd Avenue.

A flatbed truck was making a right turn onto 3rd Avenue when the driver hit the pedestrian.

According to a witness at the scene, she was pinned under the truck and one of her legs was severed.

"The truck was making a right. The old lady was crossing the street with her head down -- the back wheels caught her; ran her over. I took my machine, stopped it -- blocked traffic. I called 911. Fire trucks came, and that was the end. They picked her up, put her in the ambulance and took her away," said one witness.

The driver of the truck stayed at the scene and was issued a summons for failure to yield to a pedestrian, as well as four other violations.

Police say he faces no criminal charges.
