The Energy and Commerce Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives is debating today the September 11th Health and Compensation Act.

The panel is weighing potential amendments, and preparing to vote on the measure later today.

The legislation would provide health care and compensation for first responders whose illnesses can be linked to the September 11th attacks.

The bill is named after James Zadroga, a police officer who spent hundreds of hours at the World Trade Center site and later died of respiratory illness.

If the act passes, it will next go before the full House of Representatives for another vote.
