A local improvisational group is owning up to a stunt that aimed to keep tourists from getting in the way of New Yorkers on the sidewalk.

The group Improv Everywhere says its members were the ones who posed as Department of Transportation workers and divided the sidewalk into tourist and resident lanes. They even had a form to solicit feedback on the idea.

The line appeared on Fifth Avenue between 22nd and 23rd streets last month.

The group says its work did not attract much attention for the first couple of days, but once media and online reporters started circulating it, the actual Department of Transportation removed the spray-on chalk four days after it was put down.
