A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Wednesday to mark the opening of two new affordable housing towers in Harlem.

Beacon Towers and Beacon Mews will provide housing for middle and low income New Yorkers.

The towers are located on formerly vacant land owned by the city on 138th and 139th Streets.

"What had been a vacant lot and for years had contributed to the sense of blight and despair in the community. What's been built here now are two project that are symbols and facts about a new community, a community that's diverse and provides affordable housing to a broad range of the community residents," said New York City Housing Development Corporation President Marc Jahr.

Residents can rent units in Beacon Mews or buy units in Beacon Towers.
