An elderly woman died in the wake of a fire at a Staten Island high-rise apartment.
Flames broke out around 3 p.m. Thursday at the West Brighton Houses at 1077 Castleton Avenue.
The seventh and eighth floors of the building were evacuated.
Police say Lucille Dukes, 75, was taken to the hospital, where she died from her injuries.
About 125 firefighters responded to the alarm and several were treated for minor injuries.
"I just seen a lot of firemen throwing trash out the window and I saw a fireman on the stretcher, [they took] him to an ambulance," said a witness.
As of Friday evening, the cause of the fire was still under investigation.
