City College Radio Station Gets Multi-Million Dollar Makeover

The City College of New York’s radio station, WHCR, has received a nearly $2 million makeover.

The renovations not only doubled the studio space at CCNY’s community radio station in Harlem, but also added state-of-the-art equipment.

Funding for the renovations came from Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer and former Borough President C. Virginia Fields. It

In addition to benefiting the students, the renovations support the community volunteers who use the facilities for their own shows on 90.3 FM.

"We got music from all over the world in Spanish and it's nice to be on the radio here, doing a show for all those people," said Veridades Latinas co-host Martin de la Cruz.

"It's something that we've been waiting for, for a long time, and finally we got it,” added Veridades Latinas co-host Arismendy Garcia.

Some of the music featured on 90.3 FM is performed live in WHCR’s new studio.

"A lot of independent artists can't get air time on commercial radio, so this is an opportunity to have their music heard and seen," said Angela Harden, the station’s general manager.

The musicians can now be seen because the station is now streaming live video on its website – allowing for more people to see and hear WHCR's programming.

The station can mainly be heard in Upper Manhattan, river to river, from 59th to 181st streets. But, the station receives listener calls from the South Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn and New Jersey.

"We are continuing to develop as a station and we continue to help our community,” said radio host Iesha Sekou.
