About 1,600 residents in Harlem had their electric power restored this morning, hours after they were plunged into darkness.

The electricity returned around 7 a.m.

The power went out around 10 p.m. yesterday, around the same time as a manhole fire broke out at 110th Street and a transformer fire blazed on 140th Street.

"We were sitting here and all of a sudden the manhole blew up and smoke came out of the blue car and the police came down the street. We flagged the police officers down and they came and they called in the rest of the rescue squad," said one New Yorker last night.

"The lights are out, it's hot out here, food going bad. it's really crazy," said another New Yorker last night.

Consolidated Edison is working to determine whether the power failures and the fires were connected.

The utility apologized to its customers and says the outage was probably not weather-related.
