Former NBA star Jayson Williams pleaded guilty Friday to driving while intoxicated charges, stemming from an accident in January where he crashed his car into a tree in Manhattan.
Police say Williams, who is already serving time for an unrelated incident, had a blood-alcohol level of more than twice the legal limit when his sports utility vehicle crashed into a tree on the FDR Drive near 20th Street.
Williams, 42, originally pleaded not guilty.
Williams will begin serving his year-long sentence after he finishes his five-year sentence in New Jersey for aggravated assault in connection with the fatal shooting of his driver, Costas Christofi.
Oscar Holt III, Williams' lawyer, asked the judge to allow his client to serve both prison terms at the same time, but that motion was turned down.
"The reason Jayson Williams got the sentence he received today is because he's Jayson Williams the celebrity," said Holt. "This is what I said, that what I said, this is a harsh and excessive sentence and if it were anyone other than a celebrity, anyone other than Jayson Williams, he would not have received this sentence."
The former basketball player pleaded guilty to his involvement with Chistofi's death earlier this year.
