Manhattan Councilwoman Says City Blew Off Enforcing A/C Law

By: NY1 News

A lawmaker says the city is blowing off enforcing a law that bans stores from blasting air conditioning with their doors open.

Two years ago, the City Council voted to impose fines on large stores, and chain stores that keep their exterior doors open while using cooling systems inside.

Lawmakers say the practice taxes the power grid and wastes electricity.

Recently, Councilwoman Gale Brewer conducted a survey of her Manhattan district and found that more shops are violating the law this summer compared to last.

She says despite the increase, the Department of Consumer Affairs is not issuing fines to businesses that break the law.

"I think that warnings are fine in 2009, but in 2010 people should be getting violations," said Brewer. "I can't take on all the boilers in the city of New York but I can feel angry that one store, obviously multiplied by many, is blasting air onto the sidewalk when all they have to do is close the door."

The Department of Consumer Affairs says it has issued nine violations so far this year.
