The New York Public Library announced Wednesday that Dr. Khalil Gibran Muhammad will head the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.
He will take over beginning next year.
The Chicago native served as an assistant professor of History at Indiana University. He has deep roots in the civil rights movement, and is the Great-Grandson of the Nation of Islam founder Elijah Muhammad.
He replaces Howard Dodson who is retiring after 25 years at the helm of the Schomburg Center.
