The Reverend Al Sharpton is joining efforts to get more weapons off the streets.

He joined Police Commissioner Ray Kelly in Downtown Manhattan to announce a gun buyback program that will take place on December 18 in Harlem. The exact location is yet to be determined.

Sharpton said that while he has been critical of the NYPD, he is committed to the issue of curbing gun violence.

"We must be active in stopping the gun flow and the gun shootings and killing in communities. We must get beyond differences and politics to preserve our lives," said Sharpton.

Since the NYPD's gun buyback program began in 2008, some 6,000 illegal firearms have been surrendered.
