Hundreds of students rampaged through the hallways of a Downtown Manhattan high school Thursday after the school’s principal told teachers not to give out bathroom passes.
Murry Bergtraum High School Principal Andrea Lewis told staff and students that the school’s bathrooms would be closed, following a morning fight between two students.
During a class change, hundreds of students began running through the hallways screaming and shouting.
Teachers apparently locked their classrooms to keep their students inside while school safety officers tried to end the disturbance, which lasted about 20 minutes.
The incident was first reported by the website GothamSchools.org.
A spokeswoman for the Department of Education says one of the two students in the initial fight was sent to the hospital and released, but no other injuries were reported.
