More New Yorkers are receiving treatment for illnesses relating to the toxic aftermath of the Septemer 11th attacks, according to the National Institute for Occupation Safety and Health.

The institute says nearly 17,000 people have received care in the past year from health programs for people exposed to dust and fumes from the World Trade Center site.

That number is up about 7 percent from last year.

The group says most of those receiving care were firefighters, construction workers, police and other first responders.

About 2,500 neighborhood residents also got treatment since last summer.

The news comes less than a week after the Senate rejected the Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, which would have provided more than $7 billion in health care funding for first responders.

Senate Republicans killed the measure, citing worries about how it would be funded.
