Thousands of people rang in Christmas at St. Patrick's Cathedral's in the traditional midnight mass early Saturday morning.

Archbishop Timothy Dolan led the midnight service for the second year.

Among those in attendance were Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Governor-elect Andrew Cuomo, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly and Fire Commissioner Salvatore Cassano.

Dolan used his sermon to talk about God as the element some feel is missing in life.

"We desperately try to fill up what's missing," he said, "while the root of every anguish is that we ignore the only one who can really fill that void: God."

Prayers were offered in multiple languages, including Italian, Spanish, Chinese, Polish, and Creole.

Earlier on Christmas Eve, Dolan held a special mass at Covenant House in Hell's Kitchen.

The largest homeless youth shelter in the country, Covenant House is home to about 300 children and teens.

"There's always room for people here at Covenant House," Dolan said. "And so the Marys and the Josephs and the Jesuses of today find a welcome and a warmth and acceptance and hospitality at Covenant House. That's why I'm here. This is Christmas in action."

"Our young people are kids who, by and large, have fled unspeakable violence and come to the streets without family, not surrounded by an inspiring circle of love, and they're alone," said Covenant House president Kevin Ryan.

Dolan told those in attendance that Jesus was born homeless, and that he hopes that message resonates with residents of the youth shelter.
