New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan harkened back to one of his predecessors Thursday by pledging aid to any expectant mother in need of help.

The archbishop invoked the words of John Cardinal O'Connor at a Midtown news conference that was organized by a group that supports alternatives to abortion.

Citing statistics from the Department of Health, Dolan said 41 percent of all pregnancies in the city were terminated in 2009.

The Department of Health says induced terminations of pregnancy accounted for 38.7 percent of total pregnancies in 2009

"We are tragically letting down the tiniest most fragile and vulnerable, the little baby in the womb," said Dolan. "We've got to do more than shiver over these chilling statistics. I invite all to come together to make abortion rare."

Planned Parenthood says if Dolan and his allies are really committed to lowering the city's abortion rate, they should think about supporting efforts proven to reduce unintended pregnancies like sex education and birth control.

"Where we come from is that we really need to have all of our communities work together and really begin to provide the health care services and the information that these communities need to deal with unintended pregnancies," said Traci Perry of Planned Parenthood.

According to the most recent data, the Bronx had the highest abortion rate in 2009, followed by Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and Staten Island.
