Mayor Michael Bloomberg opened Monday the first of two next-generation data centers designed to streamline services for New Yorkers.

Within five years, it will house the technology infrastructure of more than 40 city agencies and save $100 million.

Mayor Bloomberg says the center is a look at the cleaner, leaner future of city government.

"By reducing the IT work done by individual city agencies, they'll instead be able to concentrate more of their attention and resources on what they do best: teaching students, cleaning our streets, preventing and putting out fires, protecting public health, and doing all the other things that improve our quality of life," said the mayor.

Bloomberg says the center is the result of a city report showing there were more than 50 distinct and expensive technology centers around the city.

The site for a backup data center will be selected later this year.
