Dozens took to the streets of Manhattan on Thursday to call for freedom in Tibet.
The group, called Students For A Free Tibet, joined fellow human rights advocates to demand an end to Chinese rule over the Himalayan territory.
They walked from the United Nations across Times Square to the Chinese consulate on the anniversary of the Tibetan National Uprising Day.
"We're trying to be the voice of our people in Tibet who don't have any voice," said a protester. "They no longer have the freedom of expression, the freedom of speech to voice out their own personal opinions and they don't have the freedom to exercise the religion they want to practice."
They also marched in support of the Dalai Lama, the Buddhist monk who is stepping down from his political role in the exiled Tibetan government.
His power will be given to an elected representative.
