The Whitney Museum of Art and Metropolitan Museum of Art have agreed to a unique collaboration.

In 2015, the Whitney Museum of Art will move from its current location on Madison Avenue to a new building on Ganesvoort Street in the Meatpacking District.

The groundbreaking for that building takes place in two weeks.

After the Whitney moves, the Met will move into the old Whitney building.

The Met will remain at its current locations, but the new building will give them much needed space for contemporary art from around the world.

The Whitney will continue to own the building, but the Met will operate it for a period of eight years, which could be renewable.

The Whitney has been at its current location since 1966.
