As two Queens men appeared in court Tuesday on charges they plotted to attack synagogues, an interfaith group rallied for tolerance outside City Hall.

The religious and community leaders commended police for their investigation and vowed to strengthen interfaith relations.

"All the worship places are respected, and we cannot tolerate those individuals who claim that those are Muslims. We as Muslim leaders, we do not accept them as Muslims," said Imam Sakhawat Hussain of the Al-Mahdi Center.

Ahmed Ferhani and Mohamed Mamdouh were back in court on Tuesday.

Mamdouh's lawyer said he would challenge the strength of the prosecution's case.

Prosecutors say the men targeted Jews because they believed Muslims are being mistreated.

Ferhani and Mamdouh are charged with conspiracy as a crime of terrorism under a rarely used state law.

Both men are due back in court next month.
