The city has launched the second season of NYC CoolRoofs, a program is designed to get property owners to reduce energy by applying white reflective coating on building rooftops.

It is part of the plan to reduce the city's carbon emissions by 30 percent by 2030.

"The idea is to paint the roof white, reflect the sun's rays. You reduce your electrical costs. Also, you actually could change the temperature in the street, if you do enough of these roofs," said Buildings Commissioner Robert LiMandri at a Harlem event Tuesday.

"It means a lot to actually help New York City become energy-efficient and cool down roofs. It means a lot," said volunteer Samirah Crawford. "As a New Yorker, I should help New York City."

Last year, nearly 2,000 New Yorkers volunteered to help coat more than a million square feet of rooftop.

The city is looking to coat an additional million square feet this year.
