Young athletes lace up their sneakers for the third annual National Running Day.

New York Road Runners invited 2,000 students from around the city to Icahn Stadium on Randall's Island for a day of races, parades, and games that encourage physical activity.

The youngsters are all part of the group's Mighty Miler program, which helps 50,000 students in public schools to stay active.

"Such excitement, the running, the screaming, the jumping, the games. Just to see it really makes you recognize how enjoyable physical activity is for kids," said Cliff Sperber of the New York Road Runners.

"The best part about today was having fun in the fields," said P.S. 24 third-grade student
Bethany Bencosme.

"Last year I was in first place and this year I was third place, but I still feel good," said P.S. 24 fourth-grade student Etson Peralta.

National Running Day is held on the first Wednesday of June each year.
