Surfing the web just got easier in city parks, as 20 parks across the five boroughs will be offering free WiFi service by this fall. NY1’s Michael Herzenberg filed the following report.

There's no such thing as a free lunch, but wireless access can be thanks to a new initiative launched by Mayor Michael Bloomberg and AT&T on Thursday.

"We're delighted to make this gift from all of us at AT&T to all New Yorkers,” said Randall Stephenson, AT&T’s CEO.

AT&T's effort will allow visitors to sit down and get online in parks across the five boroughs.

"I have AT&T WiFi, it connected right away,” said Bloomberg today after connecting to the Internet in East Harlem’s Thomas Jefferson Park.

The mayor announced the new initiative at that park Thursday in the shadow of the antennas that provide the coverage.

"The service is completely free,” said Bloomberg. “F, R, E, E.”

Right now, users can access the Internet in Thomas Jefferson Park, in parts of Battery Park and the Bronx's Joyce Kilmer Park.

"You don't have to register, just agree to the terms of service and you are on your way,” said Bloomberg. “And there are no ads from AT&T filling up your browser window, either."

It's a five-year, multimillion dollar commitment from AT&T. It advances the mayor's goal of making New York the nation's leading digital city.

As part of that effort, Bloomberg plans to partner with Facebook to expand how New York City’s government communicates with New Yorkers and a first-of-its-kind linkage to 311.

Over the summer, AT&T will link up three parks in the Bronx, five parks in Brooklyn, including Prospect Park, seven parks in Manhattan with multiple locations in Central Park, three parks in Queens and two parks in Staten Island.

"It's a very mature technology,” said Stephenson. “I think you'll find it very reliable and very dependable"

Not every part of each park will be WiFi enabled, but hotspot signs will be erected to guide users.
