The city has agreed to pay $1.6 million to the family of a 12-year-old student who drowned while on a school field trip last June.
The surrogate's court still needs to approve the settlement with the family of Nicole Suriel.
The Harlem sixth grader drowned while swimming during a school trip to Long Beach, New York.
There were no lifeguards on duty at the time.
The Suriel family's lawyer tells the Daily News the family plans to set up a scholarship in Nicole's honor.
They will also try to have a street or a bench near Nicole's school renamed in her honor.
News of the settlement comes after Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott moved to tighten rules for field trips that involve swimming.
