More than 250 New Yorkers laced up their sneakers Sunday for the 10th annual Miles For Moms Run-Walk in Central Park, to honor mothers who have battled cancer and to raise money for cancer research.

The four-mile event's proceeds are going this year to the Avon Women's Foundation.

Organizers said most of the runners have a loved one who has battled cancer. Founder Renee Jaffe started the organization in memory of her own mother. The two had a deal, that her mother would keep fighting her cancer and Jaffe would run a marathon.

"I trained while she went through treatment. Unfortunately, she died a week before the marathon, but I did it for her. She was with me the whole entire way," Jaffe said.

"It's something personal. I have my twin sister who had cancer and I had an aunt that died from cancer so it's something that means very much to me," said participant Karina Lau.

"We lost our mother five years ago to cancer, multi-myeloma, and I think just doing this once a year kind of reminds me of the struggle that she went through and it's just a good feeling," said participant Marie Zeolla, who ran with her sister Angela.

Men and women of all ages and running experience took part, including mothers with strollers, mother-daughter teams and even twin sisters.

"It's great to stay in shape and also feel good and do good at the same time," said participant Kristin Rosella. "I think the runners are just very motivated people who like to help others, so it's really exciting. Miles For Moms does that," said a runner.

The annual race has raised more than $100,000 over 10 years. For more information, visit milesformoms.org.
