Protesters By UN Demand Indian Point's Closure

Protesters rallied near the United Nations on Thursday to call for the closure of the Indian Point nuclear power plant north of the city.
In the wake of the nuclear accident in Japan in March, protestors said the reactors at Indian Point should not be relicensed and should be closed.
Activists said the plant is too close to New York City and said an accident like the one in Japan could happen in the state.
"Indian Point is too risky. We've seen the risks at Fukushima, we saw it at Chernobyl. Nuclear plants are just too risky to operate, certainly 35 miles from New York City," said Manhattan-Brooklyn Congressman Jerrold Nadler.
"We can not afford to have Indian Point become another nuclear sacrifice zone that would include everything from Manhattan to Dutchess County, Putnam County, Westchester County, Rockland County, to the Hudson River. It's not acceptable," said former Congressman John Hall.
Entergy, the company that owns Indian Point, said it is learning from the accident in Japan and is improving its own operations.
