New Yorkers stampeding through Union Square will notice a new piece of public art

A 26-foot-tall bronze elephant, designed by Spanish artist Miquel Barcelo, appears to defy gravity as it balances on its trunk.

Barcelo says it is meant to look like a tree from afar, and only when it is seen up close does it look like an elephant.

"It's like a big tree, a black metallic tree, people can sit down," said Barcelo. "It's one more tree in New York but this one is black, it's metal, it's urban tree."

The sculpture will be on display through the end of May.
