Investigators say a worker accidentally fell to his death down an elevator shaft at an office building in Manhattan Friday.

It happened at 230 West 38th Street in Midtown.

Police say Robert Melito, 44, was servicing an elevator on the 10th floor when he fell.

He was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he later died.

Building workers are disturbed by what happened.

"I heard a scream a little bit, and then after that they really did not give out any information," said one worker.

"It's very upsetting, it's very eerie," said another.

The Buildings Department has taken the elevator out of operation until a full investigation is complete.
