As the bid moves forward, elected officials are rallying against Palestinian statehood through the United Nations.
Dozens gathered outside the UN Monday to speak out against the application.
They praised President Barack Obama's position, agreeing that direct talks are the only solution.
"The latest theatrics out of the United Nations General Assembly is something we must stand against. The Palestinians’ unilateral bid for statehood through the United Nations is just that: political theatrics and a very harmful distraction from achieving true peace and stability,” said Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.
“In the name of this quote unquote ‘statehood resolution,’ you actually see an effort to undermine the peace process, to set the peace process back," said Public Advocate Bill de Blasio.
The UN Security Council discussed the application behind closed doors Monday.
A formal meeting will be held Wednesday.
