New Yorkers are giving back at the Bowery Mission today to make sure the less fortunate have a Thanksgiving meal to eat.

About 700 volunteers helped prepare the 500 turkeys, 1,000 pounds of potatoes and 260 gallons of gravy.

The organization is expected to serve more than 5,000 meals by the end of the day.

"I come every year here to eat turkey at the Bowery Mission. It’s a great place to be with other people for Thanksgiving,” said one visitor. “The Bowery Mission has been good to me for years."

NY1's own Vivian Lee was there serving up some goodwill.

"Given what's been happening in the economy of the last few years, being part of the news and seeing the front lines of that, actually, how many different realities and traunches of society have been affected by this, it just makes me feel like we all have a part to help out those that are less fortunate," said Lee.

The mission also gave out "blessing bags" with winter clothes, coats and other items.
Children were also given toys.
