In a candid new interview, Edward Cardinal Egan says he regrets having apologized for a sex abuse scandal that unfolded during his stint as bishop in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
The interview published in Connecticut Magazine comes 10 years after the scandal first gained national media attention.
Egan tells the magazine he inherited the cases from his predecessor bishop Walter Curtis and that none actually happened under his watch.
Egan also says he was not obligated to report the claims and denies any wrongdoing, telling the magazine, "I should never have said that. I did say if we did anything wrong, I’m sorry.... But I hate to go back over this. I think there’s more to life than that one issue, especially when I had no cases."
Meanwhile, Archbishop Timothy Dolan said he hasn't read the article but did talk to Egan.
"The Cardinal was kind enough to share with me the rather strong statement he made that I thought was right on target about his own record, that in my mind is very good, and secondly, his sensitivity toward the suffering that some of the victims experienced," said Dolan.
A victim's group says Egan's statements are shocking and will likely cause victims more pain and suffering.
Meanwhile, Dolan will be elevated to cardinal later this month.
NY1's Vivian Lee will be travelling to Rome for the ceremony.
