Department of Education officials announced Wednesday that two schools have been removed from a list of potential closures and "phase-outs," but 23 others face an uncertain future as the Panel for Educational Policy prepares to put them to a vote.
Knowledge And Power Preparatory Academy VII, a Brooklyn middle school, and the middle school in Wadleigh Secondary School for the Performing Arts in Manhattan were originally selected for phase-outs.
However, Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott said in a statement that DOE officials decided this morning to save the two middle schools, as they will be both closely monitored and undergo staffing changes.
“While these two schools continue to struggle, what we learned is that they are also poised to quickly improve. We will pay close attention to both going forward to ensure that they make the needed progress and can ultimately provide the kind high quality education that students deserve,” said Walcott said in his statement.
The PEP will vote on the remaining 22 phase-outs and one closure tomorrow.
The Academy Of Business And Community Development in Brooklyn, which is both a middle and high school, is facing closure.
Of the schools facing phase-outs, 11 are in Brooklyn, six are in the Bronx, three are in Manhattan and Queens and Staten Island have one each.
