A sexual assault suspect is awaiting arraignment after investigators say a Metropolitan Transportation Authority worker scared him off as he attacked a woman in a Manhattan subway station.

It happened just after 1 a.m. Wednesday morning at the Bowery and Delancey Street station on the J line.

Police say a man threatened a 36-year-old woman with a screwdriver, dragged her on to the tracks, and tried to rape her.

The victim spotted an MTA worker and screamed for help.

That's when the attacker ran off.

Michael Torres, 29, was arrested outside of a men's shelter.

"We tracked him down because a picture that was taken as he left the station. That picture was taken by detectives to the surrounding area, someone recognized him, and he has a very lengthy record," said Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.

Torres faces charges including assault and attempted rape.
