A security guard at the Metropolitan Museum of Art is recovering after accidentally shooting himself in the leg Friday afternoon.

Museum officials say it happened around 3 p.m. inside a locker room and that the public was never in any danger.

They say the guard was cleaning his weapon at the time, though it remains unclear why it was loaded.

The guard, whose name was not immediately available, was taken to Cornell Medical Center with non life-threatening injuries.

Museum officials say some guards do have permits to carry guns and are required to perform any maintenance or cleaning on site.

An investigation is ongoing.
