Police were investigating Sunday the death of a 15-year-old boy who fell into the East River the previous night.

Police say Justin Smith and another teen were playing on a railing along the river, when Justin fell into the water shortly before 9 p.m. Saturday.

Rescue crews quickly arrived and started searching for Justin.

He was in the water about 20 minutes before divers found him 20 feet below the surface and pulled him out.

"We found his shoes, they floated up north. But we were confident that he was at this location based on information we received from the eyewitness," said FDNY Battalion Chief John Donnelly.

Justin was taken to Metropolitan Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The medical examiner was determining the cause of the boy's death on Sunday.

Meanwhile, before racing to where the teenager had drowned, the New York City Police Department's Harbor Unit rescued a cruise ship passenger in the Hudson River on Saturday afternoon.

Crews made a high-risk transfer of a 60-year-old man who got disoriented after falling and hitting his head on a Norwegian Cruise Ship.

The man was moved from the ship to a police rescue boat just north of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.

The passenger was taken to Richmond University Medical Center and was expected to recover.
