The New York City Police Department says Briana Davis, 9, is in critical but stable condition at Jamaica Hospital.

Investigators say she was stabbed in the back of her head, her shoulder, and her back at a home located at 144 176th Street in Springfield Gardens.

Sources identify the girl's mother as Ann Carimbocas, 44, who is now in police custody.

She has not been charged yet.

"They brought the lady out in handcuffs. Real physical with her, put her in the cop car, and after that, maybe like 10 minutes later, they brought the little girl out," said one witness at the scene.

"I just know I saw them bringing a child out wrapped up in the sheets and putting the child inside an ambulance car. And the person that did it was sitting in the back of the police car with her head back just screaming," said another witness.

Police at the scene say the mother and child were visiting from their home in Suffolk County.

Ernest Etienne, who owns the two-family home where the attack took place, says the mother and daughter were visiting his tenants.

"I never seen this lady. I never seen this lady period," Etienne said.

Police say a man who saw the attack tried to wrestle the knife away and was cut on the leg.

An investigation is ongoing.
