The Space Shuttle Enterprise will be lifted by crane onto a barge Saturday for the final leg of its journey to the Intrepid.
The shuttle prototype was moved Friday from a protective tent at John F. Kennedy International Airport, where it's been since last month, to an area closer to the water.
It will be towed by tugboat Sunday night to Port Elizabeth in New Jersey.
If all goes well, the shuttle is expected to arrive at its new home on the flight deck of the Intrepid on Tuesday.
"The Enterprise is a wonderful, wonderful artifact, really the first shuttle orbiter, paved the way for the whole successful space shuttle program," said Jessica Williams, a curator of history at the Intrepid Air and Space Museum. "So it's an amazing, amazing piece of history, and we are so honored to have it here and proud that it's going to be in New York."
The exhibit officially opens to the public July 19.
