Consolidated Edison says New Yorkers need to be cool about the heat.

With all those air conditioners running, the utility company says it expects to see a major rise in energy use which could lead to outages.

Temperatures are expected to rise into the mid to upper 90's on Wednesday and Thursday.

Con Ed says everyone should follow some basic safety tips to get through the brief hot spell.

"Drink plenty of water, keep the thermostat at a reasonable setting, call us if there's a power problem. We'll get to it, and we'll get through the next couple days okay," said Con Edison Spokesman Michael Clendenin.

If there is an outage or service problems, customers should visit coned.com or call 1-800-75-CON-ED.

Meantime, city officials are reminding residents to check on elderly neighbors.

With schools still in session, the Department of Education says students will not be outside too long and they will be to able to get water.
