Just days before lighting up the night sky, crews are hard at work making final preparations for the 36th annual Macy's 4th of July fireworks show.

A team of pyro-technicians have spent the week working to load some 40,000 fireworks shells into a digital firing system.

The shells were loaded on to four barges where they will be fired off above the Hudson River.

Show organizers say each year they work to top the previous year's show, and they are confident they've done just that with this year's theme "Ignite the Night."

"A lot of special fireworks this year. We've got some fireworks that will ignite and re-ignite and that's been a fun challenge this year-to find fireworks that will have long duration. So, you'll see fireworks that will cascade for up to 17 seconds across the sky changing colors," said Macy's Fireworks Show Designer Gary Souza.

"We've produced a show with the spirit and the hope of everybody across the United States," said Macy's Fireworks Show Executive Producer Amy Kule.

Wednesday night's show kicks off at 9:20 p.m.

For the thousands expected to gather along the west side, multiple access points will be set up along the highway.
