Union Square Park got a bit greener Wednesday as Grow NYC's Green Fest brought over 40 advocacy groups together to educate people about eco-friendly practices.

It is the fourth year Grow NYC has brought the event to Union Square.

Visitors enjoyed interactive exhibits, lectures and workshops.

Groups like the Nature Conservancy of New York were on hand to inform people about the importance of maintaining a healthy local ecosystem.

"Having a healthy oyster reef off the south shore of New York or off of Long Island could be a great way to actually diminish the waves, slow 'em down," said Nate Wiowode of The Nature Conservancy. "They'll break up as they hit the reefs and it's gonna protect the communities behind. So it's not just great for your belly but it could also be great for your home and great for the water you swim in."

"So many different kinds New Yorkers are coming through here in a day," said Amanda Gentile of GrowNYC. "So we want to catch people that are maybe not already green-minded but might learn something by coming here today."
